Class 74 (2) During the loop forming cycle of the needles and during the fashioning cycle in a straight-bar machine the thread of each thread guide is clamped. A separately operated thread tensioning device is also operated during these cycles so as to maintain the yarn at a predetermined tension. The clamping devices for clamping the yarns comprise a stationary member 22, common to all of devices, over which the yarns pass and resilient members 15 17, 19 carried on shafts 11, 12, 13 and adapted to be operated by linkage to press on to the member 22 to clamp the yarns. Operation of the members 15 17, 19 is in timed relation to the movement of the yarn carriers and is effected by a roller carried by the slur bar depressing cams connected to their linkage. The members 15. 17, 19 are retained in their operative position by detents acting on their linlkage which at the end of a respective cycle are released by mechanism controlled from the cam shaft of the machine. The tensioning device for each yarn comprises a pivoted lever 31 having a guide eye 32 and which controlled by a cam on the main cam shaft moves up and down during the loop forming or fashioning cycle to maintain the tension of the yarn constant. Alternatively, the clamping mechanism may be operated by cams on the cam shaft so as to effect simultaneous clamping of all the yarns.
