Abstract

550,790. Knitting machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY & CO., Ltd., BROMLEY, T. C., and SHORTLAND, A. Oct. 16, 1941, No. 13336. [Class 74 (ii)] A take-up mechanism for separate yarns of differing strengths supplied at a common feeding point in a knitting-machine comprises members 1, 2 coupled together for movement towards and from the needles and capable of limited relative movement. In one form, the members are pivoted together by a pin and slot connection 6, 7 and each is pivoted to a fixed bracket 10. One member 1 is under control of a spring 11. The take-up members can be held inoperative by a catch lever 21 actuated by a push rod 25 under control of the pattern chain or drum. Means for tensioning the yarns between the supply and the take-up members may comprise rods 16, 17 and a spring 18. The rod 17 is fixed to the bracket 10 and the second rod 16 is pivoted at 19 and urged by a spring 20 so that its outer end engages the rod 17. One yarn y is fed between the engaging rods, and the second yarn y<SP>1</SP> is fed between the spring 18 and the rod 17. A projection 16a on the rod is engaged by the take-up member 1 when the take-up mechanism is rendered inoperative so that the tensioning means are also made inoperative. In a modication, the two take-up members are pivoted to rotate about the same fixed pivot, and one member is controlled by a spring in somewhat similar fashion to the control of member 1 by the spring 11. To couple the two members together and to allow for relative movement between them a torsion spring is arranged around the fixed pivot and has its ends secured to the two members. In this form the tensioning means comprise two eccentrics controlled by springs or counterweights so as to grip the yarns against fixed rods and having means for rotating them so that the yarns can run freely when the take-up members are rendered inoperative. In yet another form, the take-up members are mounted upon the same spring-controlled lever ; one member is fixed to the lever and the other member is formed integrally with the torsion spring arranged upon a pin on the lever so that it can move relatively to the other member. The invention is described in connection with a circular seamless hosiery machine and is applicable to plain and rib machines, including the double cylinder type, to stationary cylinder as well as to rotary ' needle cylinder machines, to multifeeder or single feeder machines with latch or bearded needles, and to flat knitting-machines. Specification 550,370 is referred to.
