Abstract
708,191. Actuation of switches. REYROLLE & Co., Ltd., A. April 23, 1952 [April 23, 1951], No. 9390/51. Class 38(5) A spring-closed circuit-breaker has a movable contact A pivoted at A<SP>1</SP> and connected to an arm D<SP>1</SP> of a bell-crank D, the main closing spring E being connected to the arm D<SP>2</SP> thereof, a further arm D<SP>3</SP> having an auxiliary spring F connected thereto. In the open position shown, the spring F opposes the spring E but as the bell-crank D is moved counter-clockwise by the spring E, the spring F moves across a dead-centre position in line with the arm D<SP>3</SP> and then acts in.the opposite sense to assist the spring E. The arrangement is preferably such that the energy of spring F is the same in the open position as it is in the position at which the contacts just begin to engage, Fig. 3 (not shown), so that the contact speed is determined by the spring E which may be adjustable. Each spring may be replaced by a battery of springs. In a modification (not shown) the arm D' carries a roller acting on a cam surface carried by the contact arm so as to modify the characteristics of the combined springs.
