Abstract

618,626. Snap-action switches. ALLDAY & SON (1922), Ltd., H. and BAIN, R. Nov. 6, 1946, No. 32939. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch for alternating currents, one of a pair of L-shaped movable contacts f, of the same length, projects from a carrier e to a greater extent than the other, whereby, when the carrier e is slid to close the switch, the said contact engages its fixed contact c and is momentarily held thereby, so that the overlapping ends of the contacts f engage one another before the other contact f engages its contact c. Springs h effect rapid closure when the slide is moved past its central position by a guided finger-piece m having a lost-motion connection k, r with the slide. When the switch is opened, both contacts f are gripped by contacts c, and the contact which projects further moves relatively to the other to form the microgap g whilst the slide is still under the control of member m, thereby producing a slow break. A springs, compressed between the base a and the inner ends of contacts f, maintains the latter in engagement when the switch is closed. The slide may be buffered by a spring u, and the finger-piece m by springs 2 engaging stops 3 on the base. The contacts f may project to the same extent in which case the fixed contacts are of different lengths.
