Abstract
601,000. Snap-action switches. SMART & BROWN (ENGINEERS), Ltd., and CLARK, C. W. Dec. 7, 1945, No. 33149. [Class 38 (v)] A snap-action switch comprises a slidable member carrying the movable contacts and a second slidable member actuated manually, the two slidable members being connected by the snap-action mechanism, Fig. 1, shows in plan the base of a switch having two pairs of fixed contacts 3, 4 adapted to be bridged by moving contacts 7, 8 which are pivoted in recesses in a sliding member 5. As shown in Fig. 3, the member 5 has a rib 9 which engages in a groove in the switch base. The member 5 is moved by a manually operated sliding member 6 which is connected to the member 5 by snap-action mechanism consisting of two rods 12 pivoted in a recess in the member 5 and passing at their other ends through holes in the turned-up ends of a member 16 secured to the actuating member 6. The rods 12 are surrounded by helical springs 13 which give the member 5 a snap action after passing in either direction through the dead-centre position. In a modification, the rods 12 are pivoted to the member 6 and the member 16 is carried by the member 5. The member 16 may be bimetallic so that on heating of the switch parts due, for example, to dust settling on the contacts, the member 16 bends and compresses the springs 13 which thereby increase the pressure between the contacts.
