705,872. Linear-dimension gauges. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. Nov. 26, 1951, No. 27716/51. Class 106 (2) A thickness gauging device, for articles such as lenses, comprises opposed gauging points and means extending forwardly of the gauging points to enable the gauging points to be located at a required distance from a predetermined point on the article during a gauging operation. In Fig. 1 the opposed gauging points 19, 20 are at one end of a pair of arms 17, 18 pivoted together at 25, there being an additional arm 24 pivoted at 25, that carries at its free end 29 a pivoted transparent block 28, the block 28 having a reference mark thereon that is aligned with a predetermined point on the article 22 before a gauging operation is effected. A spring 21 urges the gauging points 19, 20 together and a spring 30 urges the transparent block 28 against the article 22. In Fig. 3, the means enabling the gauging points 19, 20 to be located comprises a holder 38 on the arm 17, the holder 38 housing a withdrawal tape 37 at the free end of which is a mark for alignment with the predetermined point on the article 22. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 show modifications of the invention, like numerals being used for like parts.
