[Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for gauging the symmetry of the side surfaces of a tooth of a toothed element comprises two movable members for engaging the surfaces, means for effecting relative movement between these members and the tooth and indicating means controlled by said movable members. A gear-wheel 20 to be tested is mounted on a carrier block 14 and clamped thereto by a clamp 18. The block 14 slides in guideways in a base 10 and may be moved along by means of a screw 50 carried by an arm which is pivoted to the base and may be swung downwardly to admit the block 14. Two gauging levers 32 are pivoted to a block at one end of the base and have pointed fingers to engage the surfaces to be gauged, their other arms abutting against a spring-loaded T- shaped member 36 which is pivoted on a pin 40 projecting from a block 38. The latter slides in a guideway parallel to the guideways of the block 14. The feeler of a dial gauge, which is mounted on a lug upstanding from the base, is in contact with a projecting arm 44 of the T-shaped member 36, and indicates any lack of symmetry between the two surfaces of the gear tooth as the latter is moved between the pointed arms of the levers 32 by rotating the screw 50. The approach of the block 14 towards the block which supports the levers 32 is limited by stops (not shown) and a compression spring 58, and the movement of the levers 32 is restricted by adjustable stops 43. - The dial gauge may be replaced by a recording instrument.
