[Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] The dimensions or shapes of a filamentary or other body are determined by passing the body through or in contact with a jet of fluid and recording the variations in pressure of the jet. In one form, Fig. 1, a filament or the like t is passed between two nozzles 2, 3 of which the nozzle 2 is fed from a constant pressure source 15 whilst the nozzle 3 communicates with a member 5. The member 5 comprises a diaphragm 6 having an arm 7 on which bears an arm 8 supported by a spring 10 and connected to a lever 11 operating an ink-syphon pen 12 on a recorder 13. In a modification, the pressure-sensitive member 5 may be connected to the nozzle 2. The nozzle 2 may be circular, square or oblong. Two pairs of nozzles, mounted at right-angles to each other, may be used. The intake pipe 4 may be furnished with a leak or may be in communication with an expansible chamber, the size of which may be controlled. In another modification, Fig. 9, the filament t is passed in front of an auxiliary nozzle 23, the jet from which impinges on the jet between nozzles 1 and 4. A pressure-sensitive member 5 is coupled to the nozzle 4. In all cases the member 5 may have a diaphragm forming an external wall. A further nozzle may be placed in front of this diaphragm and connected to a constant pressure reservoir. Movement of the diaphragm throttles the nozzle to a varying degree and the resultant pressure variations are recorded. The arm 8 of the member 5 may be arranged to close electrical contacts to give visible or audible signals if predetermined limits of variation are exceeded. The syphon recorder may comprise two fixed pens 30, 31, Fig. 1, and a moving pen 12. The pens 30, 31 dip into a well 34 and are mounted on a slidable and rotatable member 36, whilst the pen 12 dips into a well 35 containing differently coloured ink and is mounted on a similar member 37. The nozzle 1 may be accurately positioned by adjustably mounting it upon an arm 56, Fig. 12, of a link quadrilateral 53, 54, 55, 56 which is pivoted at 58 to a base 57. The quadrilateral is held against adjusting screws 63 by a spring 62. The thread is guided past the nozzle by pins 68, 68<1> and 73, 73<1> mounted on arms 66, 71, of which the arm 66 is held by a spring 69 against a fine adjusting screw 70.
