Classes 35 and 38 (4) Variable excitation for a variable speed synchronous alternator is provided by selectively connecting, by means of switches 16 ... 33, to the stator (not shown), thereof a condenser battery comprising three or a plurality of three groups 10 ... 15 of condensers, each group consisting of six condenser elements which are connected in series in pairs with the pairs connected in delta, and the switches 22 ... 33 connect each of the corners of the delta to a point between the series connected elements in the opposite leg of the delta so that the elements can be switched from series to parallel operation without interruption. The stator is connected to three-phase circuit bus-bars U, V, W. Various values of capacity, symmetrical about the circuit, are provided by closing certain selected switches as described in the Specification. Certain condensers are more strongly insulated than others.
