Abstract

662,549. Testing circuit-breakers. BRITISH ELECTRICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and MASON, F. O. July 6,1950 [April 8, 1949], No. 6314/49. Class 37. Apparatus for testing a circuit-breaker comprises a low voltage generator for supplying the power current and an auxiliary circuit for supplying the peak voltage to give the correct restriking voltage wave. The power current is obtained from a low voltage generator A, Fig. 1, through a limiting reactor L1, an auxiliary circuit-breaker ACB and a timed contactor switch S1, giving the current curve Q, Fig. 2. The load circuit is simulated by the network C1, L2, C2, wherein condenser C2 is charged to the peak A.C. voltage and allowed to discharge through the test circuit-breaker CB when a second timed contactor S2 is closed. The test circuit-breaker CB is opened at time t2, and the auxiliary circuit-breaker ACB at time t3. The contactor S2 is closed at time t4 so that the first half-cycle of the discharge current P from condenser C2 straddles the point t3, and the values of L2, C2 are such that the rate of change of curves P, Q are identical at zero, so that the recovery voltage N has the desired form and magnitude.
