812,101. High-tension switches; arcing- preventing in switches; protective cut-out arrangements. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE JEUMONT. June 27, 1957 [June 28. 1956], No. 20321/57. Class 38 (5). An A.C. circuit-breaker with main contacts 3, 4 and parallel auxiliary contacts 5, 6 is provided with an impulse transmitter 8 synchronized with the current to be interrupted, the transmitter applying a first pulse to an operating circuit 11 to close the auxiliary contacts 5, 6 and then open the main contacts 3, 4 shortly before a current zero, and a second pulse to another operating circuit 12 to reopen the auxiliary contacts before this current zero, but after the opening of the main contacts. The second pulse may also effect the opening of a disconnecting switch 2, the main contacts then reclosing. The main contacts may be housed in an enclosure 22 filled with gas under pressure and the auxiliary contacts may operate under a high vacuum. The transmitter 8 may be controlled by a current transformer 7 or from a shunt in the controlled circuit 1, and may be arranged to produce the pulses only if the rate of increase of the current at the start of a half cycle has a predetermined sense and a value greater than a desired minimum, but less than a predetermined maximum. The transmitter 8 may also be controlled remotely by an hydraulic pulse generator 16 connected to the transmitter 8 through an oil-filled insulating pipe 17. The generator 16 is controlled by an " opening " button 18 and a closing button 19, the operation of the latter causing a pulse to be applied to a circuit 13 to effect the closing of the switch 2.
