Abstract

843,323. Removing metal by spark erosion. LA SOUDURE ELECTRIQUE LANGUEPIN. July 17, 1958 [July 19, 1957], No. 22945/58. Class 83 (4). A spark erosion apparatus has a charging circuit comprising a source 1 of alternating current which charges a capacitive storage means 5 connected across the spark gap 10 through a rectifier network 2, and wherein the total inductance L of the charging circuit, the capacitance C and the angular frequency # of the current are chosen so as substantially to satisfy the equation #L = I/#C. The charging circuit has a low inductance and the frequency of the current may be varied by driving the alternator 1 by a motor M through a speedchange gear B. Alternatively several alternators each driven at a different speed or a variable frequency converter connected to the supply main may be used. The capacitor 5 is preferably of variable capacity and may comprise several capacitors connectible by switches in parallel and/or series. The capacitor switching may be linked with the frequency control whereby a workpiece 10 is first eroded at low frequency with high capacity and subsequently the capacity is decreased as the frequency is increased. Specific examples are given.
