Abstract
1393076 Control of commutator motors MALTE MANSON AB 5 March 1973 [3 March 1972] 10570/73 Heading H2J A commutator motor has two field windings L1, L2 carried on respective poles, each of which has a second winding L3, L4 forming respective current transformers with the windings L1, L2, which transformers provide a firing signal, via rectifier Z4-7, resistors R1, R2, R3, capacitor C1 and diac Z3, to a controlled diode Z2 in antiparallel connection with an uncontrolled diode Z1, the arrangement being such that for a range of low motor loads the signal from the transformers is insufficient to break down the diac Z3 so that the motor receives alternate half cycles of an A.C. supply through the diode Z1, whereas for a range of high loads the diode Z2 is fired at each half cycle so that the motor receives the full wave A.C. supply. A speed/load characteristic such as that shown in Fig. 2b is thus produced, the characteristic having a first portion (for low loads) following the speed/load characteristic for half wave A.C. supply joined by a "knee" portion c to a second portion (for high loads) following the speed/load characteristic for full wave A.C. supply, the overall effect being to maintain the speed in a predetermined range over the range of motor loads. Diac Z3 may be replaced by a relay whose coil is connected across members R2, Cl, and whose contacts are in series between members Z4-7 and R3, Fig. 4 (not shown). A half wave rectifier may be used in place of rectifier Z4-7, Fig. 3 (not shown).
