Abstract
878,242. Exciting dynamo-electric machines; supply systems for welding arcs. LINCOLN ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 28, 1957 [Nov. 28, 1956], No. 36431/56. Classes 35 and 38 (4). A D.C. generator such as for use in electric welding and constructed to limit the shortcircuit current when idling, comprises a series winding 1, a shunt field winding 3 connectable by first circuit connections in subtractive magnetic relation to the series winding 1, and an additional field winding 2 excitable by second circuit connections in additive magnetic relation to the series winding 1. The connections are formed by a relay 4 which is operable when, as shown, the generator is idling to permit energization of the shunt winding 3 and to deenergize the additional winding 2 so that the two opposing windings 1, 3 are effective, and when the generator is on load to de-energize the shtmt winding 3 and to permit energization of the additional winding 2. The shunt winding 3 may be on the main poles of the field.
