689,056. Coke oven doors. KOPPERS GES., H. July 4, 1950 [July 4, 1949 ; Jan. 19, 1950], No. 16684/50. Class 55 (i). A coke oven door comprising a fireproof stopper 7 mounted in an external iron frame 8 is secured within the oven opening 1 by latches 16 each of which is loosely mounted on a bolt 14 projecting from a hub-like part 13 of the frame 8 and is adapted to engage, by its ends, a pair of opposed hooks 17 on the door frame 6, plate springs 21 being interposed between said hub 13 and a plate 20, which bears against an adjustable bush 19 at the middle of the latch, for pressing the door against the frame in its closed position. Release of the door is effected by rotating the latch bolt 14 until a collar 24 abuts the plate 20 and compresses the springs 21, whereupon the latch 16 is free to be disengaged from the hooks 17. The collar 24 normally lies freely within a recess 25 in the bush 19. Several modifications, with alternative means for compressing the springs 21, are described, and in each the frame 8 is fitted with a sheet metal plate 9 which extends over the whole door opening and has a peripheral knife edge 10 adapted to contact a sealing surface on the door frame 6.
