An espagnolette fastener for a casement window comprises a housing, a rod 12 which is adapted to be rotatably mounted within the housing when the fastener is fitted to the window, an actuating member 16 which is carried by the rod, which projects from an aperture 15a formed in the housing and which is laterally movable in the aperture to rotate the rod, hook means 12a provided on the rod in a position to engage when the fastener is fitted to the window, retaining means 13 carried by the frame surrounding the window and cover means 23, 24 carried by the actuating member for closing the aperture substantially in all positions of the actuating member. The housing consists of a hollow moulding 10 and a plate 15, the moulding being apertured and the plate 15 covering the aperture. As shown, the fastener is used for a window having two casements each comprising two stiles 1, 2 or 7, 8 bolted together. The casement comprising stiles 7, 8 is intended to be closed first and the fastener is secured to stile 1 of the other casement. The rod 12 is mounted vertically and has a hook 12a at each end, each of which engages a retaining means 13 on the window frame at the top or bottom. The actuating member 16 is a handle pivotally mounted on a lug 14 welded to the rod 12 and it has an offset curved tongue 18 which can engage a socket in a keeper 22 on the first closed casement. The tongue is disengaged by lifting the handle so that it rotates relative to the lug 14 and when this has been done the handle can be moved with the lug to rotate the rod 12 to release the hooks 12a.
