SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent." J 31, 11921;,
Application filer]. July 12, 192D. Serial No. 395,742.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that we, PETER H. J OHNSON and PAUL A. KosEoKI, citizens of the United States, and residents, of Kenosha, county of Kenosha, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to sash fastener.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastener for locking the upper and lower Window sashes together and clamping them tightly along their adjoining portions and one in which the operation of the fastener is automatically effected on the closing of the windows.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device.
In the drawings the numeral 3 designates a portion of the frame of the upper window sash and 4 a portion of the frame of the lower window sash. Where the windows are closed the beveled edges 5 and 6 of the frames 3 and 4 should be drawn together to form a weather-tight seal and be locked in this position.
The sash fastener embodying the invention consists of a latch plate 7 on the lower sash and a latch 8 carried by the upper sash.
The latch plate 7 has a raised portion 9 projecting beyond the front edge of the sash and provided with an opening 10 projecting into the plane of movement of the upper sash.
The latch 8 is vertically pivotally mounted on a pin '11 secured to cars 12 on a base plate 13 mounted on the upper sash. The
V latch 8 is in the form of a bell crank lever.
acting on the latch to swing the arm14 forwardly.
When the windows are closed the locking shoulder 17 engages the plate 7 adjacent the opening 10 so that movement of the sashes with respect to each other is prevented except by the release of the latch from the inside, and while so engaged the spring19 acting on the latch swings the arm 14 forwardly and thus moves the edge 6 of the frame 4 into engagement with the edge 5 of the frame 3. On a release of the latch either window sash may be moved to open position. On a closing of the windows the edge 21 of the plate 17 engages the inclined side of the latch and swings the latch rearwardly against the action of the spring 19 until the shoulder 17 passes this edge. As soon as the shoulder 17 passes the edge 21 the spring moves the latch into locking engagement with the plate 7.
y We desire it to be understood that this invention is not limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
What we claim as our invention is: j
1. In a sash fastener, the combination of a latch plate secured to an outer surface of one of the sashes, a bell crank lever vertically pivotally mounted on the other sash and exteriorly thereof, one arm of said lever having a locking latch engageable with said plate, and a spring acting on the other arm of said lever to hold'the latch in locked position and draw the sashes together.
2. In a sash fastener, the combination of a latch plate having a flat base secured to an outer surface of one of the sashes and having a latch opening projectingover the front edge of this sash, a base plate mounted on an outer surface of the other sash, a member pivotally mounted on said baseplate above its base and having a Vertically disposed latch automatically engageable with said latch plate to secure the sashes in closed position, and a spring on said base plate acting upon said member to hold it in locked position.
3. In a sash fastener, the combination of a latch plate having a flat base secured to an outer surface of one of the sashes and having a latch opening projecting over the front edge of this sash, a base plate having a flat base mounted on an outer surface of the other sash, a bell crank lever vertically pivotally mounted on said base plate above its base and having a locking shoulder on one arm engageable With the latch plate, a rod projecting upwardly from the base and passing through an opening in the other arm of the lever and provided With a threaded upper end, an adjusting nut mounted on the upper end of said rod, and
In testimony whereof We aflix our signa- 10 tures.
PETER H. JOHNSON. PAUL A. KOSECKI.
