In a coke oven door 13, Fig. 4, of the selfsealing type, in which a metallic section 25 supports a flexible seal 26 contacting a sealing surface 28 on the door frame 12, a pair of latch bars 34 which span the door 13 and engage latch hooks 35 fixed to the door frame 12 or the buckstays 11, are connected to the door 13 by means of double-arm centre lock toggles 21. Each toggle 21 comprises a pair of arms 37, 39, Fig. 3, pivoted at 46, 46<SP>1</SP>, to the door and latch bar 34 respectively and pivoted centrally to each other. The door-operating machine comprises a rack 50 which is vertically reciprocable by means of a hand or power-operated pinion 51. After the machine has been moved up to the door, so that the roller 52 contacts the bearing 29, the rack 50 is raised. This causes hooks 53 on the dooroperating machine to engage lugs 30 on the door, and fixed strikers 54 on the machine to contact hooks 43 on the arms 37. The toggles are moved beyond dead-centre and the portions 44 of hooks 43 finally strike the latch bars 34 to move them out of engagement with the latch hooks 35. On further upward movement of the rack 50 the door 13 is raised by means of the hooks 53 fully engaging the lugs 30. On replacing the door 13 and moving the rack 50 downwardly, movable strikers 56 on the dooroperating machine contact heads 42 on the arms 37 to move the toggles 21 into the locked position, further downward movement of the rack 50 to free the hooks 53 from the lugs 30, causing the strikers 56 to pivot against the action of springs 59.
