Abstract
557,502. Coke-oven doors. KOPPERS CO. Aug. 17, 1942, No. 11529. Convention date, June 25. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Group XII] The latch-bar 31 of a coke oven door is operated by turning a handle 62 secured to a cam 61 on the bar by apparatus comprising a hub 42 from which radial arms 43, 44, 45 project, one arm 44 by a projection 46 releasing the cam, and another arm carrying a counterweighted pivoted member 48 which is swung back, as shown in Fig. 4, when the device is advanced towards the door and tightens the cam by pressure on the handle 62 when the device is drawn back from the door. The latch bars are non-integral with the door, and are of the kind described in Specification 556,723 and the door-operating machine is of the type described in Specifications 523,257, [Group XII], and 557,498, [Group XII]. The latch-operating device is actuated solely by movement due to the approach and retraction of the door-operating machine to and from the door. The machine as a whole is mounted on tracks 11 and its carriage 14 is moved to and from the oven face on wheels 15 and supports a mast 16 to which is affixed a lever system 17, 18, 19, by which the carriage is reciprocated as described in Specification 557,498. The door head mechanism 26 is carried by a threaded column 23, and is raised or lowered by rotation of the column by its motor 21. Forked members 32 carried by the door-head mechanism support the latch bars during their latching and unlatching. In operation, as the door head mechanism approaches the door, the forked members 32 loosely engage the latch bars and rollers 35 are resiliently held by springs 38 in contact with their basses 36 on the door face, and the arm 44 of the latch-operating device approaches the handle 62 of the cam 61. On further movement of the door head mechanism the springs 38 are compressed, and the sealing edge 57 pressed against the door frame, the latch-bar operating devices entering openings 64 and the cam being turned and released by its handle 62 out of contact with its bearing plate 63 as in Fig. 3. The door hooks 27, 28 enter their openings 65, and, the latch bar being freed, elevation of the door-head mechanism raises the door hooks into engagement with the door, and lifts the latch bars from their hooks 60, the door being now supported by the door-operating machine. An initial slight raising of the door while it is still pressed by the forked members 32 and springs 38 exerts a scraping by the sealing edge 57 over the door frame 58, and removes incrustations of carbonaceous material, facilitating good contact when the door is replaced. During movement away from the door face, the springs 38 force the door back into tight contact with the door-hooks 27, 28 and rigidly hold the door, and the door is slewed sideways as described in Specification 557,498, [Group XII]. The door is reseated by repeating the operations in the reverse order.
