Air and gases, controlling direction of flow of; driving-mechanism, applications of.-A unit for fabric-drying apparatus such as described in Specification 311,222 comprises a casing, a heating chamber, pairs of driving rollers, a cylinder within the casing having driving discs engaging with the driving rollers, and means for raising the cylinder from the driving rollers. In the apparatus shown, which is that described in Specifications 311,222 and 329,348, the perforated cylinder 24 is mounted in a casing 1, and is supported and driven by discs 30, 31, which engage V-shaped grooves 29 in the cylinder. The driving shafts 32, 33 of the units may be directly coupled to those of adjacent units. A timing device is connected with means for raising the cylinder from the driving discs which comprises discs 45 which engage the grooves 29, and are raised by a spring 46 through levers 40, 42. The timing device also releases a sliding door 3 which is opened by a spring 10, at the same time closing a door 15 through which drying air is supplied through the heater 14 by a fan 20. The timing device comprises a rack 65 which normally engages a pinion 94 but which can be released by the operator and set in a predetermined vertical position according to graduations on the casing 59. A pivot 78, Fig. 14, carries a latch 80 which engages the door 3, a latch 83 which engages a bar 74 connected to the lever 40 and an arm carrying a sliding block 86. The closing of the door 3 releases the latch 83, and allows the lever 40 to be depressed by the pedal 41, lowering the cylinder on to the driving discs, the bar being held down by the latch 83 as shown in Fig. 14. The pinion 94 is actuated through two ratchet mechanisms 103, 114, Fig. 7, by a rod 112 eccentrically pivoted on the cylinder. A lug 71 on the rack moves the block 86 into the path of a lug 90 on the cylinder whereby the latches 80, 83 are released, the door 3 being opened and the cylinder raised from the driving discs into engagement with brake blocks 38.
