Abstract

742,681. Windows. WARWICK, H. F. Oct. 14, 1954 [July 14, 1953], No. 19585/53. Class 20(3). Sliding window operating apparatus comprises a manually operable lever mounted for rotation through an arc less than a semi-circle and rockable cam means, operated by an initial movement of the lever in either direction to slacken spring-pressed guides locking the window to its frame and operable on further movement of the lever in the same direction to jam against and rotate a surrounding member fixed to a spring balanced lever system moving the window. As shown, a vehicle window 1 has parallel vertical side edges 2 sliding in oppositely facing channel guides 3, which may be faced with felt 4, one of the flanges 5 of each guide being hinged to the web of the channel about a pin 6 and urged by a spring 40 into gripping engagement with the window edge. The lower edge of the window 1 is fixed in a yoke or frame 7 which carries a pair of vertically spaced pins 8, 9 slidable in a vertical slot 10 in a plate 11 fixed to the vehicle door frame, the pins being spring-pressed oppositely on the yoke 7 to apply a centring movement to the window 1 when the flanges 5 are freed. One end of a lever arm 12 is pivoted to the pin 9, the other end carrying a pin 13 slidable in a horizontal guide slot 14 in the plate 11, one end of a lever arm 16 being pivoted to the arm 12 on a pin 15 intermediate its ends. The lever arm 16 is rotatably mounted about a horizontal axis 17 fixed to the plate 11 and adjacent the opposite end which is connected by a cord 18 and pulley 19, or similar means, to a horizontally disposed tension spring 20 designed to counterbalance the weight of the window 1. A segmental drum 21 is carried by the arm 16 surrounding the axis 17 but leaving a slot 22 extending through about 70 degrees, and through which lies the operating handle 23. Within the drum 21, the handle 23 carries a segmental plate 29 which bears against the extremities of a cam plate 24, of roughly saddle shape, which has pins 25 and 26 engaging in short arcuate slots 27-28 formed in the lever arm 16, so that initial movement of the handle 23 in either direction rocks the cam plate 24 without moving the lever arm 16. This movement of cam plate 24 is transmitted, to move the flanges 5 against the springs 40, through a roller 39 on a push rod 30 pivoted to a crank 31 on a transverse shaft 32 having pins 33 engaging slots 34 in segmental plate 35 secured to the flanges 5. A compression spring 36 arranged between a collar 37 on the rod 30 and a fixed abutment 38 maintaining the roller 39 in contact with the cam plate 24. Further movement of the handle 23 causes the cam plate 24 to jam against the internal wall of the drum 21 to turn the lever arm 16 to move the window in either direction. A latch 43 fixed to the shaft 32 is arranged to engage in a slot in the upper pin 8 on the yoke 7 whenever the window is moved to its fully shut position, initial movement of the handle 23 to rotate the shaft 32 being necessary to release the latch.
