Abstract
1,210,167. Doors operated by counter weights; latches. D. F. BRAUN. 5 June, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 26862/68. Headings E2A and E2M. A door operating mechanism for a door panel 10, particularly a garage "up-and-over" door, which is biased towards its closed position (Fig. 2) by its own weight, is opened manually with the aid of a counterweight 26 to the position of Fig. 7 where the door is held by a latch 31 and then closes under its own weight upon release of the latch, or is opened automatically upon release of an auxiliary weight 50 to the position of Fig. 8 and then closed manually, comprises a counterweight 26 and auxiliary weight 50, the moments of which about a pivot 14 can be adjusted by means of movable stops 30 and 54, a latch 31 engaging with catch receiving portions 41 of an extension 39 of arm 24 and having an arm 33 which is depressed to release the latch by means of (a) a hand operated plunger 45 connected to a cord or chain 46 passing over a pulley 47 or (b) a cable arrangement (not shown) whereby a lever arm is depressed by a vehicle wheel to shorten or lengthen a cable or (c) a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 42 having a plunger 43, the cylinder being connected by a tube to a compressable tread in front of the garage (Fig. 1, not shown), as many catch receiving por tions 41 being provided as there are wheels passing over the tread, the arm 33 also being connected to a rod 34 which passes through an apertured plate 35 and a helical spring 36 held in compression by an adjustable collar 37, the rod being connected to an arm 68 pivoted at 69 which, through a roller, engages an arm 63 pivotally mounted at 64 on arm 24 and normally contacts a stop 65 on this arm, the arm 63 operating a latch 56 which engages a pin 55 on the arm 51 for control of the auxiliary weight, the latch being pivoted at 57 and being normally located as in Fig. 8 by means of a spring 59. A latch arrangement for securing the door in the closed position (Figs. 3 and 5 not shown) comprises a pair of rods 77 extending the width of the door and a ram 79 with a piston 80 coaxial with the rod. The ram is connected by a tube or hose 81 with the ram 42. A latch member 83 fitted to the rod is located behind a stop 84 rotatably mounted on a shaft 85 and biased by a helical spring 86. For manual release of the door a cord 87 connects the shaft 85 with the pulley 47. The mechanism may be adapted to operate tilting doors counterweighted by helical springs and also doors sliding on tilted tracks.
