657,995. Loading-ramps on vehicles; balancing devices. GIBSON, G. T., and RAMSEY, W. W. June 20, 1949, No. 16288. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (iv)] A combined end door and ramp for a vehicle having upper and lower decks comprises an upright main frame for attachment to the rear end of the vehicle body, said main frame incorporating vertical guides disposed one at each side of and within the main frame, inner and outer ramp sections hinged together and having the inner section pivotally attached to means movable in said vertical guides, and counter-balancing means at each side of the main frame and interconnected with the inner section of the ramp, the counter-balancing means at one side of the frame being a duplicate of that at the other side. The two-deck animal-carrying vehicle shown has a ramp (Fig. 2) formed in two parts 17, 20 joined by a rule joint and serving as an end door for the vehicle. The inner part 17 of the ramp carries rollers 14, engaging guides 13 at the sides of the vehicle so that the ramp may serve either of the decks, and adapted to be locked at the upper or lower ends of the guides. Counterbalancing spring devices 26 are connected between brackets 23 on the sides of the vehicle and levers 33 pivoted to brackets 24. Each lever 33 bears by means of a forked end or roller 38 on a lever 35 pivoted at the sides of the vehicle and provided with a slot 36 engaging a pin 37 at the side of the inner part 17 of the ramp. The spring devices 26 may engage any of several holes 34 in the lever 33. When the parts 17, 20 of the ramp have been raised one after the other to close the end of the vehicle they may be locked by bolts at the sides of the vehicle which engage members on the outer part 20 of the ramp. The ramp and its guides 13 are formed as a unit for attachment to any vehicle. The unit has a frame (Fig. 8) which includes verticals 10 comprising timbers 10a carrying the guides 13, rear plates 10b and side plates 10c adapted to be secured over the cleading of the vehicle, the verticals being joined at their lower ends by a transverse member comprising angle irons 11a joined by a shaped back plate 11b.
