In operating mechanism for a door 10 with a protective edge 25 adapted to yield on contact with an obstacle and thus to actuate a switch which stops or reverses the mechanism, means are provided to retract the edge when the door is fully open, to increase the opening, without affecting the protective action. In the arrangement shown in the open position, the edge 25 is supported on the door by two levers 26, 27, the latter having a balancing spring attached to it. The upper lever 26 is pivoted at 32 and has an extension in engagement with the actuating member of a switch 40 carried on a plate 35 which is also mounted on the pivot 32 and which is connected to a link 17 of the dooroperating mechanism by links 60, 62 and a lever 61 on the door. As the door is closed, the link 17 at first swings downwards, raising the link 60 and allowing the edge 25 to swing outwards, while maintaining the switch 40 in the ineffective position ; near the closed position the link 17 swings upwards, forcing down the link 60 and retracting the edge. In both these movements the members 35, 26 move together, but if the edge 25 is pushed in, in any position of the door, the member 26 moves relatively to 35 to allow the switch 40 to move to the position in which closing of the door is stopped or prevented. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the link 60 is connected to a lever which has a roller for engagement with cams arranged to lift the lever at each end of the door movement, to depress the link 60 and retract the edge; a spring urges the link upwards against an adjustable stop. In other arrangements, the switch may be engaged, instead of released, by actuation of the edge; it may be mounted on the lever 26; and the retraction of the edge in the closed position may be omitted. In a further modification, the edge 25 may be formed with a separate edge portion which operates the switch when it is moved relatively to the main portion, and the switch is thus unaffected when the two portions are retracted together.
