Abstract

731,278. Gates. CLITHEROE, J. S. July 10, 1953 [July 14, 1952], No. 17740/52. Class 45. [Also in Groups X and XXV] In a gate or door which is mounted between two posts or stiles 16, 17 and which can hinge and swing about either post or stile by means of hinge pins 20-23 on each end which can be moved into and out of engagement with cooperating hinge sockets by operating handles (one for each end of the gate or door) and having a bar 28 slidable between two positions in one of which it prevents disengagement of the hinge pins at one end of the gate or door and permits disengagement of the hinge pins at the other end 'and in the other of which it permits disengagement of the first said hinge pins and prevents disengagement of the second said hinge pins, and having stop means 30, 31 located at each side of the gate or door such that on opening the gate or door the stop means remote from the engaged hinges prevents movement of the slidable bar into a position permitting disengagement of the engaged hinges, the gate or door is provided with bell crank levers 24, 25 which constitute the operating handles, one end of each lever being pivotally connected to a vertically movable member which moves the hinge pins adjacent to it into an out of engagement with their co-operating sockets, the other end of each lever 24, 25 projecting into a slot 26, 27 located in the slidable bar 28, the slots being dimensioned and spaced so that during part of the movement of one of the bell crank levers to disengage the adjacent hinge pins the end of the lever moves freely in its associated slot and during the remainder of its movement the door is moved therewith. As shown hinge pins 20, 22 are integral with one vertically movable member and hinge pins 21, 23 with the other so that upward movement of the members disengage the pins from their sockets which are formed in lugs 18, 19 on the gate post 16 or 17. The connection of the limb of each bell crank lever with its slot is such that the limb moves freely in the slot for the first half of its travel and moves the bar during the second half of its travel ; in the central position of the bar both sets of hinged pins are engaged. The stop means 30, 31 are positioned one on each side of the gate or door. These means are each pivoted to a pivoted lever 32 or 33 and are arranged so that when the gate or door is opened the member adjacent the free edge drops by gravity or spring means into the return path of the bar 28 so that it cannot be moved sufficiently to disengage the operating hinge pins. When the gate or door is shut the lever 32 or 33 rides up a ramp surface on the adjacent top plug 18 of the gate or door and so raises the member 32 or 33 out of the path of the bar 28 to allow the hinge pins to engage the lugs to latch the gate or door.
