Abstract

619,442. Automatic catches. PHILLIPS SCREW CO. Dec. 10, 1946, No. 36469. Convention date, Aug. 12. [Class 44] A catch for two relatively movable members, e.g. the door and frame of a cabinet, one of which. is biased to move relatively to the other, e.g. by a spring, in the opening direction, comprises a latch fixed to one member, and a keeper pivotally mounted on the other member and having its free end normally projecting into the path of the latch, the keeper having a shoulder facing away from the pivot, which shoulder engages and restrains the latch in latched position after it has been moved in closing direction and then returned slightly in opening direction by the biasing means. The device is arranged so that it may be wholly concealed when mounted on a cabinet. The latch, shown as mounted on the door, comprises a flanged plate 30, Fig. 3, having a projecting part 33 with two turned-up lugs 34, 35. The keeper, mounted inside one side of the cabinet, has a base plate 16, Figs. 2 and 6, to which is pivoted a keeper member 17 comprising a pear-shaped base with an outstanding boss 21 defining a shoulder 22 with depending lips 23, and an upstanding stop 24. In movement of the door to closed position, the lug 34 first abuts against the side of the boss 21 of the keeper, swinging the latter to the position of Fig. 9, when the flange 31 of the plate 30 of the latch abuts against the upper'part of the keeper, the door being then past its normal closed position. The door, biased by a spring device, say near the hinges, rebounds, allowing the keeper to drop to the position of Fig. 11, in which it is arrested by abutment of the latch with the under side of shoulder 22. To open, the door is pushed inwardly to the position of Fig. 13, freeing the latch from the keeper, and is then allowed to swing open under the influence of the biasing spring ; during opening, the latch merely swings the keeper aside without engaging between shoulder 22 and stop 24. The lug 35 is arranged to prevent the keeper from swinging up over its pivot if the door is slammed. In a modification, the keeper is biased to its centre position by a spring.
