Abstract

722,380. Window operating apparatus. GARDINER, SONS & CO., Ltd. Oct. 6, 1953 [Oct. 6, 1952], No. 24995/52. Class 20 (3). A window-operating device for windows pivoted vertically, or horizontally, in a frame, the pivotal axis being situated at an edge of the frame, or between two opposite edges thereof, comprises a lever 4 pivoted at 5 to a bracket 6 fixed to one of the stiles of a frame 1 for a window 2 which, as shown, is hinged at 3 along its top edge within the frame, one end of the lever 4 being pivoted at 8 to a link 9 having a stop abutment 12 at one end and being pivoted at 10 at the other end to a bracket 11 fixed to the lower end of the window, a weighted latch 14, pivoted at 15 to the free end of the lever 4 having an undercut flat 17 adapted to engage a recess 7 in the bracket 6 when the window is closed. To close the window, the lever 4 is rotated anti-clockwise by means of a pole engaged on a hook 13, on the free end of the lever 4, the opening of the window being effected by engaging the pole on the end 18 of the latch 14 and pulling the latter downward. In a modification in which the window 2 is hinged along a side to one of the stiles of the frame 1 universal joint members are included between the bracket 11 and the link 9 and between the latter and the corresponding end of the lever 4. Both embodiments may have the upper arm of the lever 4 cranked to align with the bracket 6, and a friction joint may be formed by bolting the lever 4 to the bracket 6 and including fibre washers in the joint. It may also be arranged to resist an unwanted closing of the window, that when the window is fully open, the pivot point 8 lies slightly above a line connecting the pivot points 5, 10.
