Abstract

726,071. Door operating appliances, hinges. NEWMAN & SONS, Ltd., W., and SHEAD, H. C. Oct. 16, 1953 [Jan. 29, 1953], No. 2537/53. Classes 65(1) and 65(2). [Also in Group X] Closing and mounting means for a swing door comprises a vertical tube 2 attached to an inner edge of the door, a coil torsion spring 13 housed within the tube and connected at its respective ends to anchorage members 14 and 21 disposed rotatably within the tube, a stationary vertical rod 16 passing into the tube from an end thereof through holes in the anchorage members, stationary stop members 18 and 24, the latter of which is on the rod, serving to prevent rotation of the anchorage members in opposite directions respectively, and spring winding means actuated by the door; the arrangement being such that the spring is wound up from either its top or bottom end in accordance with the direction in which the door is opened. The rod 16 is secured to a fixed plate 17 which also carries the stop member 18. The lower end of the tube carries an extension sleeve 9. A plug 10, which screws into the latter and is held in adjusted position by a locknut 11, is recessed in its lower surface to pivot on a fixed conical pin 12. Member 14 has an external head 15 provided with a radially projecting pin 19 which, in the closed position of the door, abuts the stop 18. Stop 24, which is in the form of a radially projecting pin carried by the rod, bears against a step 23 formed on member 21. When the door is opened in the clockwise direction, as viewed from above, pin 19 is engaged by the edge of a notch cut in a tube 3, which is welded to tube 2 and constitutes the upper frame member of the door, whereby member 14 is turned to wind up the spring from above, member 21 being held stationary by the pin 24. When the door is opened in the anti-clockwise direction, tube 3 rotates free of pin 19 and the latter is held stationary by stop 18, while a pin 26 set transversely in tube 2 co-operates with an extension 25 of stop 23 to rotate member 21, and thereby wind up the spring from below. The door, which is of the type adapted to flex initially under the impact of a truck before turning about its pivotal mounting, is made from a rubber panel 1 secured along its upper and inner edges to metal strips 5 and 6 respectively, the strips being respectively welded to the tubes 3 and 2. A corner metal gusset 4 is welded to the tubes and the panel is attached to the gusset by means of a metal strip 8.
