The vertical end member 16 of a gate 10 is loosely journalled in a bracket 12 at the upper part of the gate post 11 and is also journalled in a lever 15 pivotally attached to the lower end of the gatepost, the lever being operable to tilt the member 16, for opening and closing the gate, from a device situated in the roadway so as to be operated by the pressure of a vehicle thereupon. The respective arms of the lever are connected by rods 20, 22 and arms 23, 25 to rock shafts 24, 26, the latter being operable by pairs of depressible pads 27a, 27b and 27c, 27d in the roadway. The gate, when closed, is held by the engagement of a latch 32 with a notched catch 31 carried by a post 30, an abutment 36 on the gate then bearing against a leaf spring 35 secured to the post 30. Depression of either pads 27a or 27c results in the gate being tilted to disengage the catch and also to stress the spring for giving the gate an impetus in the opening direction. The gate is held in the open position by a catch 38 mounted on a post 37 which also carries a leaf spring 39 adapted to co-operate with the abutment 36 for giving the gate an impetus in the closing direction when either pads 27b or 27d are depressed. The catch is pivoted at 33 to the gate and is operable by a handle 34 against spring meaus. The gate is counterbalanced against spring pressure by a vane 40. Specification 691,749 is referred to.
