Abstract

989,553. Automatic door operating gear; releasable fastenings. R. DENTON. Oct. 11, 1963 [July 14, 1962], No. 22829/62. Addition to 968,084. Headings E2A and E2M. The upwardly opening door, e.g. of the "up-and-over" type, described in the parent Specification is modified in that the loaded operating means 14 controlled by the remote control mechanism is adapted to act directly on the counterbalancing means 4 whereby the door is over counterbalanced for obtaining its opening movement. As shown the door 1 is of the "up-and-over" type and is carried by rollers 2 running along tracks 3, and by transverse pins 10 with axis extending horizontally through the centre of gravity running in vertical grooves 9 at each side of the door. The door is partly counterbalanced by a weight 4 just less than the weight of the door and attached to the pin 10 (Fig. 4) by a cord or cable 5 running over a pulley 6, the operating means being one side or both sides of the door. Automatic opening or closing of the door is effected by a lever 17, located outside the door and operating the mechanism by a cable 19, passing around a pulley 21 at the base of the door post and attached to a trigger 13 which releases an additional weight 14 acting on the weight 4 causing over counterbalancing of the door and so effecting automatic opening. The trigger 13 may also be operated by a solenoid with the switch placed at some convenient position outside the door. The door locking devices both in the closed and open positions are released by the cable 19 becoming taut, in the first instance operating a cranked arm 30 to release a keeper 27 just prior to operating the trigger 13 for automatic opening, and for automatic closing, when in the open position, the cable releases a catch 33 from blade spring 34 mounted on an upper part of the door post 22, the door closing under its own weight. Both catches may also be operated by chains 35, 28 connected to the door handle 8. Slamming of the door to the closed position is arrested by arranging the door to lift the additional weight 14 just before closing. As described the door is a one piece "up-and-over" type but the operating gear may be applied to doors of the roller-shutter kind, the cable 5 in this case being attached to the base of the door. Further one or both weights may be replaced by springs.
