MECHAN ISM FOR OPERATING- H'OISTWAY DOORS.
'F i vices kfor opening hoistway doors which normally close horizontallyr overv an opening in a sidewalk leading toa basement or cellar.
An object of the invention is to provide vertically movable means entirely independent of the door opening devices for :swinging the doors upward to unco-ver the opening communicating with the basement.
Another object of the invention is to providea fixed stop, adapted to be `engaged when the doors are opened, by a depending member on a rear gate secured to a door-to limit the swing of the doors so that when the opening force is moved out of action the doors will gravitate to securely close the opening.
Another object of the invention is to link o-ne of the doors with a rear gate so that when the force is applied directly to one of the doors both doors will open in unison, and when the force is removed'by lowering the vertically movable means the `doors will simultaneously close.. v
Another object of the invention is to provide end gates to guard the space between the front ends of the doors, and means ses cured to the doors or gates to limit the inward swing of the gates.
The invention resides more particularly in the novel combinations hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a device embodying this invention.

The device for opening thedoors in unison when force is applied includes: a rear gate or guard 10 secured to the door 9 thus moving therewith. The gate is practically rectangular and it has a depending member 11, the function of which will be hereinafter described. A second gate 12 has one end pivoted at 14 to the door 8 near its .forward end while another portion of the gate is pivoted at 15 to the lower portion of the gate 10. The gates overlap each other so that one `can pass the other when the doors are actuated. The doors are countcrbalanced by means of a weight 16 suspended from one end of a cable 17 guided over rollers 18 and having its other end fastened to thedepending portion of the gate.
In order to limit the swing of the doors when opened a stop 1.9 best seen in Fig. 1, is provided. The stop is secured to the frame and when the doors are fully opened the depending portion of the gate strikes the stop thereby'positioning the doors at right angles to the sidewalk or opening so that when the vtorce is removed 'the doors will automatically swing' downward to cover the opening. f
The means for Vraising the 'doors consists of a post 20 slidingly mounted in a hanger 21 .fixed to ther wgallof thehoistway. VThe upper end of the post has a jib or projecting arm 22 and a cable guided o-ver rollers 24 operated by a winch or similar well-known means, not shown, is employed to raise ash barrels and other articles from the basement. The post can be vertically raised and lowered in any well-known way. On the crane post is mounted a pair of anti-friction rollers 25 at times made to coact with a cam block 26 fixed to the bottom of the door 8. The rollers ride over the cam transmitting the initial thrust or push to open the doors. A rod 27 is yoked to the post by means of a head member 28 and it carries an anti-friction roller 29 to at times engage the cam.
To prevent anybody from accidently falling into the basement through the front gap between the open doors a pair of gates 30 swingingly connected by means of spring i hinges to the doors are employed. The gates can be swung outwardly to give passage to the hoisted articles. As indicated in Fig. 2 the gates are prevented from swinging inwardly by angle irons 3l secured to the front inner end of each' door or gate or 'forming a part of the hinge. The gates are out ot line with each other so that when the doors close they can pass each'other or in other words one overlaps the other` When it is desired to open the doors the ost is operated to vertically slide in the iianger. The anti-friction rollers on the post roll over the cam which actuates the rear pivoted gate link connection to swing both of the doors upward. In this position the doors are held open by the engagement ot the vside ot the rod with the cam, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The crane when eoacting with the door is raised above the level ot the sidewalk or above the plane ot the doors when closed and the jib can be swiveled with the post as fulcrum to bring it in any desirable position to hoist or unload the articles. It will be seen that the post is arranged at the front ot the hatchway and the means Ator opening both doors in unison at the extreme back of the hatchway.
Modifications ot the invention may be made within the scope ot the claims and the law of equivalents for example, when the opening is located adjacent a wall the rear closure can be omitted and the gate l2 can be .in the form of a link with one end pivoted to one of the doors and the other end to a bracket or arm ixed to the other door.
I claim:-
l. In mechanism for operating hoistway doors the combination with a pair of swinging doors made to close horizont-ally over an opening, ot a member secured to one ot the doors, means for pivotally connecting the other door to the member, a fixed stop at times engaged by the member to limit the opening movement of the doors, and a vertically movable post eoacting with the bottom of one ol the doors to force both of the doors open.
2. In mechanism for operating hoistway doors the combination with a pair of swinging doors made to close horizontally over an opening, ot a gate secured to one of the doors, a second gate pivotally connected to the other door and the first named gate, a fixed stop on the secured gate to limit the opening movement of the doors, and a vertically movable post eoacting with the bottom ot one of the doors to torce both ot the doors open.
3. In operating' hoistway doors the combination with a pair of swinging doors made to close horizontally over an opening, of a gate secured to one of the doors, a depending member located at the lower end of the gate pivotally, a second gate connected to the other door and pivoted to the first named gate, a fixed stop at times engaged by the depending member to limit the opening movement ot the doors, and a vertically movable post eoacting with the bottom of one ot the doors to force both of the doors open. In mechanism for operating hoistway doors the combination with a pair of swinging doors made to close horizontally over an opening, of a pair of gates hinged to the doors to protect the opening, one overlapping the other, and a stop secured to the doors to prevent inward swing of the gates when the doors are open.
