To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RUTAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Queen's, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Operating Hoistway-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to means for openand closing the doors of sidewalk hoistways, and is designed especially for service with hoisting apparatus installed in the hoistway for raising cans of ashes and like loads from the cellar to the sidewalkj The object of the invention is to provide simple, easily installed and operated means whereby the elevation or upward extension of the hoisting apparatus above the sidewalk level will automatically open the doors and close them again when such hoisting apparatus is lowered.
The invention consists in' certain novel features of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described. and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.-
Figure 1 is an elevation of the door operating mechanism,.the doors and portions of the hoistway being shown in vertical section, and certain portions of the hoisting apparatus omitted. Fig. 2 is a corresponding vertical section, partly in elevation,

As illustrated in the drawings the invention is arranged to serve with a hoisting ap- 1 paratus similar to that shown in Letters Patent to Louis 0. Form-an, dated April 30, 1912, No. 1,024,885, in which a hollow post K is firmly supported in the hoistway and receives telescopically a vertically movable standard L carrying at its upper end a hoisting-head in which is a hoisting-drum L only partially shown, operated by a crank M through the medium of a gearwheel M and pinion L as will be understood. The standard is raised or lowered by the engagea rack-wheel K operated by a crank K' through the medium of a gearwheel K and pinion K This elevating mechanism is mounted on the guideways K K for the counterweight J. The roller H projects from a clamp H securely fastened upon the standard L below the hoistinghead, or other convenient point, and is so located relatively to the notch g as to engage and coact with the lever Cto open and close the doors.
It will be noted that the door operating mechanism is wholly supported upon the hatch-frame, and that the counterweight J is guided upon the post K, so that in installing the apparatus it is only necessary to erect the post in'proper relation to the frame to insure correct vositioning and proper operation both of the door opening mechanism and of the elevating and hoisting mechanism.
In apparatus of this character the work of raising the loads from the cellar is frequently done by a single operator, therefore it is highly advantageous to have the doors open and close automatically with the rise and descent of the hoistingdiead, for the reason that it saves the several ascents to the sidewalk and return usually required in opening and closing the doors and elevating and lowering the hoisting-head.
The levers and links are in the form of thin flat bars and are located close to the frame and therefore do not obstruct the hoistway. .Vhen the doors are fully opened beyond the vertical lines of the hinges they are held open by gravity aided by the inertia and friction of the opening mechanism, and when closed are efl 'ectually locked against opening from the exterior by reason of the engagement of the roller in the notch The doors are-practically locked when closed because the standard with its head and other connections is too heavy to be lifted by an opening pull on the doors; it; requires a train of mechanism to raise the standard, and the same gearing aids in resisting the opening pull.
I claim 1. In a device of the character set forth, a hoistway, hoisting apparatus therein having a vertically movable standard, means'for elevating said standard, verticallyvswinging doors covering such hoistway, means depending wi'thin the hoistway and means pivotally supported thereon and pivotally connected with each other and with said doors and coiiperating with said standard for antomatically operating the doors.

In a device of thecharacter set forth, a hoistway, hoisting apparatus therein having a vertically movable standard, means for elevating said standard, vertically swinging doors covering such hoistway, means depending within the hoistway and means pivotally supported thereon and pivotally connected with each other and with said, doors and cooperating with said standard for antomatically operating the doors, a member rising and falling with said doors, and a cooperating member on a. connection between said doors and the depending member.

and adapted to engagein' said notch and to coact with said arm and its lever to open and close said doors, a pulley on said flange, a cable thereon attached at one end to one of said levers, and a counterweight suspended from the other end of said cable.

In a device of thecharac'ter set forth, a hoistway, a frame forming the mouth thereof and having a flange extending within such hoistway, swinging doors pivotally mounted on said frame and arranged to cover such hoistway, levers pivoted at opposite points on said flange and loosely connected at their ends to rise and sink together, a link for each lever, each link pivoted at one end to the latter and at the other to one of said doors, an arm on one of said levers forming a notch, a tubular post fixed in said hoistway, a vertical standard arranged to slide telescopically in said post, means carried by said post for raising and lowering said standard, and a projecting roller carried by said standard and adapted to engage in said notch and to coact with said arm and its lever to open and close said doors by the rising and sinking movements of said standard.

In a device of the character set forth, a hoistway, a frame forming the mouth thereof and having a flange extending within such hoistway, swinging doors pivotally mounted on said frame and arranged to cover such hoistway, levers pivoted at opposite points on said flange and loosely connected at their ends to rise and sink together, a link for each lever, each link pivoted at one end to the latter and at the other to one of said doors, an arm on one-of said levers forming a notch, a tubular post fixed .in said hoistway, a vertical standard arranged to slide telescopically in said post, means carried by said post for raising and lowering said standard, a projecting roller carried by said standard and adapted to en.-
