Class 5(i) In a tobacco shredding machine the motion of the knife 2 which reciprocates in a circular arc 28 Fig. 4 about a pivot 24 is modified on the upstroke to follow a path 29 distanced from the arcuate mouthpiece 11 so that the knife is clear of the e tobacco being fed through the mouthpiece. This is done by providing eccentric c bushes 20 as pivots for the arms 18 carrying the knife 2 such bushes 20 b e ing automatically rocked for the upstroke of the knife. Such automatic adjustment of the bushes 20 pushes the arms 18 to the right Fig. 1 for the upstroke of the knife 2. This rocking is obtained from a cam 48 on the crankshaft 10 pushing a rod 42 towards 20, such push being coupled through linkwork 34, 36, 38, 40 to rock the extension arms 30 of the bushes 20. The clearance between the knife 2 and the mouthpiece can be set by mounting the bushes 20 on eccentric collars 22 on a shaft 24 which can be turned by worm drive 51 and handwheel 52 to give the required clearance. The tobacco is fed between upper rollers 16 and a lower roller 14 to the mouthpiece. The upper edge 15 of the mouthpiece and the upper feed rollers 16 can rise and fall so that a constant pressure is applied to the tobacco even though the rate of tobacco feed may fluctuate. Such rise : nd fall is in an arcuate path in the arcuate face of the mouthpiece 11 as a whole.
