[Class 31(i)] [Also in Group V] In a machine for cutting out pieces from a continuously moving sheet or web of material, in which a cutting head is reciprocated in two perpendicular directions so that the cutters describe a closed path in space, the reciprocation parallel to the web movement is effected by a lever of the first order, whose pivot is adjustable to control the length of horizontal travel. A web 2 such as dough carried on a conveyer 1 passes over a table 3, in end extensions of which are formed guides for rods 6 carrying a cutter head 5 and cutters 4. The rods 6 are pivoted to rotating crank pins 7 on a shaft 8, and are fulcrummed about blocks 10 carried on arms 11 slidable vertically on fixed guides 18 by the rotation of a wheel 17 and screwed rod 13, whereby the blocks 10 slide in slots 9 in the rods 6 to vary the horizontal throw of the cutters, the vertical movement being determined by the crank pins 7. The table 3 shares the horizontal reciprocation of the rods 6, being mounted on arms 20 bored to receive an eccentric bush 21 rotatably mounted about a boss 22 on the frame of the machine, the bush 21 having a worm segment 24 engaging a worm 25, whereby the height of the table is adjustable by the hand-wheel 28. During the cutting stroke, the cutters, web and table move at the same speed, to ensure a clean cut. The required adjustment of the blocks 10 depends on the size of the cutters and the required space betwen cut-out portions.
