Abstract

1,142,826. Cutting webs. STEWART-WARNER CORP. 8 Nov., 1967 [8 Nov., 19661, No.50866/67. Heading B4B. Apparatus for cutting a web transversely of a web path comprises first and second blades defining a web region between them, and operating means arranged to effect relative movement between the blades whereby a point of cutting intersection of the blades moves across the web region in a cutting stroke, in which during said cutting stroke, the second blade moves with a generally longitudinal component of movement across the web region, whereby the uncut part of the web tends to be moved towards the point of intersection. In the form shown, the apparatus is applied to cutting a moist paper web 24, Fig. 1, fed from a facsimile machine 10 in the direction of arrow 26. The web is fed between a roller 28, driven by an electric motor 30, and an idler roller 32 and is cut transversely between fixed and movable cutter blades 92 and 133 respectively. The movable blade is carried by a pair of pivot arms 138 and 140, Fig. 4, each connected at one end 150 or 134 to a vertical support plate 44 and its other end 162 or 148 to a blade support arm 132. The pivot arm 138 moves from a generally horizontal position to a generally vertical position and the pivot arm 140 moves from a generally vertical position to a generally horizontal position. The end 162 of the arm 138 is also connected to one end of a crank arm 166 the other end of which is connected at 172 to an arm 174 driven by a motor (170), Fig. 2 (not shown). The upper end 196 of the cutting edge 136 of the blade 133 contacts a plate 186 adjustably secured to the support plate 44. The fixed blade 92 is part of a U-shaped cutter assembly 82 which is pivotable about bolts 98, 100 and is urged to the left, Fig. 1, by a spring 104. The angular position of the blade 92 is adjustable by means of an eccentricallymounted cam 128, Fig. 5, abutting a slide 118.
