In the present state of the art shearlng cutters are of several types. In one type the shearing blade is pivoted andis rocked by its operating handle to progressively contact with and shear the material. Vfith an other type the blade is held parallel to the.
work andthe cut is effected by a downward and: longitudinal movement of the blade. The latter type is more satisfactory in. its operation, but has the disadvantage that the blade is usually in engagement with bear-- This precludes theings at opposite ends. insertion of the work laterally beneath the blade from one end thereof, as may be done with, cutters of' the rocking type and where used in the cutting of belts, it: is necessary to draw the whole length of the belt longitudinally beneath the blade before it can be severed. the blade is given both a rocking and a parallel movement, the former permitting openin; to receive thework, while the latter performs the shearing, by adrawing out. Further features ofthe improvement are: The means forenga'ging the blade with bearings at opposite ends thereof during. the performance of the cut and the means for act-uatmg the blade by a lever handle, as hereinafter set forth- In detail, A is a; frame or base provided with the cutting table B and with upwardly extending bifurcated brackets C. and D, at opposite ends thereof. E is the cutter arm which extends. across the table and is embraced; by the bifurcated brackets to be slidable therein. At one end the portion of the arm E, whichi isembraced by the bifurcated bracket C, is itself bifurcated to form cheek plates F bearing against the inner faces of the furcati-ons of the member C. L is a gear segment which isembraced by the furcation or cheek plates F and pivot ally engages the pin H. This segment is. formed integral with: an arm L to the outer end of which is attached an operating. handle or lever arm he gear segment L engages a. rack bar N secured to the cheek plates F and extending parallel to the slots F. The arrangement is such that when the lever or handle arm M is rocked, this will rotate the gear segment. L and by its engagementwith the rack N. will. move the arm E This longitudinal movement is, howevenguided by the engagement of the rollers G with. the guide slots F and the rollers I with the guide bearings K so that the arm- E. isgiven a downward. as well as a longitudinal movement. 0 is the shearing blade secured to the arm E. and P is a wooden strip forming an. insert in a. groove in the. table against which strip the, blade 0 is pressed.

A further movement of the handle M: will cause a rocking of thearm E upon the pivot pin H, thereby separating the outer end of said armv fronr the bracket member D and. providing clearance for the lateral; insertion of the work. If the work to beperformed is the cutting: of a belt this may be inserted laterally as described, one edgethereofbeing pressed against aguide Q-on-thetablewvhich is perpendicul'ar to the blade 0. The handle may then. be operated in thereverse direc: tion, first rocking. the arm E downward to engage the rollers I with the bearings K and then in the further movement of the handle, moving the arm E downward and longitudinally, the cutting blade 0 being maintained parallel with the table. This movement is continued until the blade completely severs the work and contacts with the wooden insert P.
The inclined bearings K of the bracket D are formed with the lower guide portion K extending outward beyond the upper guide portion K so that the rollers I will clear said upper guide while still in contact with the lower guide. Thus when the arm E is rocked dowward, the rollers I clearing the guide K will first contact with the guide K, which by arresting further angular movement of the arm E will compel the relative movement of the gear segment L and rack N. The outer end of the arm E is preferably provided with a handle R which is so inclined and of such dimensions that it will travel downward be tween the furcations of the bracket D.
' What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a shearing cutter, the combination with a bed or table, of a shearing member, bearings at opposite ends of said shearing member bifurcated to embrace the same, a lever pivotally engaging one of said bifurcated bearings and provided with means for rocking said shearing member upon said last mentioned bearing to disengage the same from the opposite bearing.
2. Ina shearing cutter, the combination with a bed or table, of a shearing member, bearings on said table for engaging opposite ends of said shearing member to guide the same during the shearing cut, and means for rocking said shearing member upon one of said bearings to disengage the same from the opposite bearing.
3. In a shearing cutter, with a bed or table, of a shearing member extending parallel thereto, bearings projecting upward from said bed or table engageable with opposite ends of said shearing member to guide the same through oblique parallel paths, and means engaging said shearing member at one end thereof for moving the same while in engagement with both bearings and for rocking it out of engagement with one of said bearings,
4. In a shearing cutter, the combination with a bed or table, of a shearing member, bracket bearings extending upward from said bed or table at opposite ends of said shearing member and bifurcated to embrace the same, one of said bearings being provided with an inclined guide-way with which said shearing member is slidably' engaged, a lever pivotally engaging the opposite bifurcated bearing and provided with a gear segment, a slotted flange on said shearing member engaging the pivot of said the combination lever and inclined parallel to the inclined guide-way in the opposite bearing, a rack on said shearing member engaging said gear segment, whereby a rocking of said lever will move said shearing member upward or downward obliquely in parallel relation to said table and at the end of the upward movement will disengage the same from the bearing opposite the pivot and will rock said member out of engagement with said bearing.
5. In a shearing cutter, the combination with a bed or table, of a shearing member provided with a roller bearing at one end and bifurcated at its opposite end, the furcations being provided with inclined slots, a rack between said furcations parallel to said slots, bracket bearings extending upward from said bed or table bifurcated to embrace the opposite ends of said shearing member, one of said bracket bearings having inclined guide-ways for engaging the roller bearing on said shearing member and the other of said bracket bearings being provided with a pivot pin extending tl rough the inclined slots in the bifurcated portion of said shearing member, and an operating lever embraced by the furcations of said shearing member pivoted on said pin and provided with a segmental gear for engaging said rack, whereby the rocking of said lever will move said shearing member along said inclined bearings and at the end of the upward movement will rock said shearing member on said pivot, disengaging and separating the opposite end from said bracket bearin 6. In a shearing cutter, the combination with a bed or table and a shearing member, of means including upstanding bracket bearings engaging opposite ends of said shearing member to brace the same towards said bed or table, and means permitting the disengagement of one end of said shearing mem ber from said first mentioned means for the insertion of the work laterally therebeneath.
7 In a shearing cutter, the combination with a bed or table, of a shearing member, means including a segmental gear engaging one end of said shearing member for actuating the same towards or from said bed or table, means engaging the opposite endpi' said shearing member coacting with said actuating means to brace said opposite end towards the table and permitting the separation of said shearing member therefrom for the lateral insertion of the work.
