1437672 Cutting apparatus GRAPHA-HOLDING AG 3 June 1974 [5 June 1973] 24569/74 Heading B4B A guillotine comprises at least one blade 40 for cutting the top or bottom edge of a book 2 supported during cutting on a support surface, the portion 7 of the blade which cuts through the spine of the book being inclined at an angle of not less than 60 degrees to the support surface during a cut. As shown a pair of blades 4, 40 are mounted on a reciprocable member 3 for cutting the top and bottom edges of a book simultaneously. Each blade is formed with cutting edge portions 6 and 7, the portion 7 being inclined so as to cut gradually through the spine thereby preventing crushing thereof. A further blade 10 is mounted on the member 3 for cutting the front edge of the book at a work station B. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the blade portion (7<SP>1</SP>) is inclined in a direction away from the support surface such that as the latter portion cuts through the spine the book is urged against abutments (8<SP>1</SP>). In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the blade 4011 is made in two separate portions, the portion 6<SP>11</SP> being secured directly to the member 3<SP>11</SP> and the portion 711 secured to a bracket 11 which is adjustably fixed to the blade. The blade portion is secured to the bracket by screw means 13, 14 such that the angle can be adjusted.
