Abstract
1383944 Cutting-machines GERBER GARMENT TECHNOLOGY Inc 4 July 1972 [3 Jan 1971] 31251/72 Heading B4B Apparatus for cutting sheet material according to pattern in which an elongated knife reciprocating at right angles to the plane of the material is caused to follow the pattern under control means, includes further control means to vary the speed of reciprocation of the knife according to the cutting conditions, e.g. speed of advance of the knife, radius of the cutting path, to avoid, e.g. overheating. The speed is changed by varying the speed of a motor 70 driving a crank mechanism 71 connected to the knife 14. The machine may cut a layup of fabric on a penetrable bed as described in U.S.A. Specification 3,495,492, on which it is held by vacuum and an overlying sheet of impervious material, Fig. 2 (not shown). In one arrangement stroke and knife feed speeds are derived from signals on a program tape 22. The stroke speed is related to the variable speed of advance along the X and Y axes through the material and is higher for long relatively straight path portions and reduced for shorter portions, curves and cornering. The stroke speed may be controlled alternatively directly by the knife feed speed, by signals derived directly from it without the intervention of the tape. Stroking speeds may be infinitely variable or variable in preselected steps. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,286,312 and 1,293,945.
