T all whom may eojmemr A Be it known that I, vE-R'Nni J. WAfiL- sTRoM, a citizen of the United States, reslidiiig at Brooklyn, 061111133 of Kings, and state of New York, have inyeiite'd a new and useful Improvement iii Tobacco Cuttet's', of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toan improvement in'tdba-cco cutters for shredding tobacco for cigarette manufacture; and itsinai n objectis the production of an efficinta nd economic'al machine of t his type in Which the feedii g mean is controlled dire-Ga by the means ehip'ldyed for shredding the tobacco, WVith this and other objects not specifically men tioned in View, the inye'ntioii consists in certain cdnsti'ufi'o'tioiis and combinations which Will be hereinafter fullyfdescribe'd and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
h In the accompanying drawings, which form "part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same 0'1" like parts, Fig. 1 is a front eleyati'onof a ctitter constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig, 2 is a sectional View "taken on the line 2-2 in 1,1and Fig. 3 is a plan viewed from the line 3 3 in Fig.1. 7 v v 4 Th carrying the invention i'n'to 'efiech there is provided means for feeding the 'tdba'cco a "thick mass or sheet, means for slicing the sheet fed to term shreds of tobacco, and cam-controlled means for interi'nittently operating the feeding means While the shredding means is not cutting. In the best constructions contei'nplated, the operating means includes a ratchet mechanism actuated the khife-calrying frame of the shied'ding -means While said frame is mov-j in upwardly after'a out has been effected, and worm whe'el mechanism actuated 'ihtermittently by jt he ratchet mechanism for rotating the feed rollers The above nen tion'ed means and mechanism may be Widely Varied in construction Within the scope of the claims, for the particular machine selected to illustrate the invention. is but one PATENT orificea CUTTER.

of many fio ssihle eoneiete' embodiments of the same. The invention; therefore, is iibt to be restricted to the" precise details (if the structtire shown and described. V
In the machinev selected to" iliustiatfe the invention, t indicates the machine frame, mm 5- indicates the bottom at a u-tugh, and 6 its sides, in which the machine operator buildsup a think 'sheet ot tobacco. At one end of this trough are ttto superposed feed rollers 7 and 8 having corrugated peripheries ft'oi (wag ing the sheet of tobacco albiig the botton' of the trough and forcing it in compressed condition thi'oug'h a threat -9 jhst beyond said rollers. The roller 7 is fast on and driven by a shaft 10, and the roller 8 is fast on and driven by a shaft '11, both of these shafts being journale'd in suitable bearings supported by the machine frame. The shaft 10 carries and is driven by a Worm-Wheel 12, *andthe'shai't 11 carries and is "driven by a Worm-Wheel I3. Bdth Worm-Wheels are in fh'iesh With ;a vertical shaft 14 having a right-hand mm 15' 'driv in}; the wane-wheel '12, and a left-hand Worm 16 driving the Worm yvheel 13'. The means eiii'ploye'd for operating this v'eitical shah will be hereinafter described.
At the end of the throat 9 is located a shearplate 17 secured to the machine frame. Cdaotirig with this shear plate a reciproeating hniie l8, secured to. a knife-carrying frame 19 by means of'clamp bolts 20 'ahd adj'usting screws '21, The knife-carrying frame "19 is slidably mounted between gib's 22', 22 secured to the machine frame. It is reciprocated by ineans of a yoke 23 'piyo'ted to 211 bar 24 fast in bosses 25, 25
termed on the frame 19. The other end of this yo'ke is journaled on a ciank26 formed on the power shaft27 journ'ale'd in bearings 28, 28 on the machine ira me. This' shaft is driven by means of a belt, not shown, but operating on 'the fast and loose jpulleys 29 and 30. The shaft 217 also carries a balancing fly-Wheel 31. By 'i'nean-s of the mechanism just described, the knife is moved upwardly and downwardly across the throat 9 through which the tobacco protrudes as fed about of an inch during each cycle of operations. The tobacco sliced off is in the form of long shreds suitable for cigarette manufacture.
The means employed for operating the feeding means in accurate timed relation with the movement of the knife 18 includes a ratchet mechanism actuated by the knifecarrying frame .19 of the shredding means. l/Vith this end in view, a ratchet 32 is fast on the upper-end of the vertical shaft 14 before referred to. Just below this ratchet, and rotatably mounted on the shaft 14, is an oscillating member 33 carrying a pawl 34 engaging the ratchet. This oscillating memher is provided with a spiral, groove 85, and in this groove is a roller 36 carried by the knife-carrying frame 19. detent pawl 37, supported by the machine frame, also engages the ratchet.
lVhen the knife-carrying frame is moved downwardly to shred the tobacco, the roller 36 moves downwardly in a straight line, and in so moving causes the oscillating'member 33 to rotate on the vertical shaft 14, bringing the pawl 34 back with it for a fresh bite on the ratchet. Then, on the return or upward stroke of the knife-carrying frame, it is time for the feeding means to operate to advance the sheet of tobacco another of an inch, and so, during this upward movement of the knife-carrying frame, the
oscillating member is rotated in the opposite direction and the pawl 84 rotates the ratchet 32 and the shaft 14 fast thereto, thus operating the worm-wheel mechanism and feed rollers 7 and 8. The cycle of operations is then repeated.
What is claimed is:
