660,533. Wood cutting and working. VAN DAMME, R. C. L. Oct. 21, 1949, No. 27130/49. Class 145 (i) In machines for planing &c. pieces of wood by means of rotating cutters arranged to produce a surface which in cross section is undulating, the up-and-down movement of the cutter or cutters is produced by means operated by the movement of the piece of wood in passing through the machine, such movement usually being due to the residual force of the piece as it is discharged or delivered from a moulding machine. The piece of wood 7 entering into the machine passes over a toothed chain 6 and below the rubber-coated rollers 9, 13, mounted to exert spring pressure. The chain 6 is carried by sprocket rollers 4, 5 which are consequently rotated one of them 5 being employed to drive, through a shaft 36, a cam 35 which through a double-armed rocking lever 23 pivoted on the frame at 29 actuates the up- and-down movement of the cutters 14, 15. Adjustment means such as screws are provided to vary the positions of the cutters. Means are also provided to prevent sideways movement of the rotating cutters and intermediate means between the sprocket roller 5 and the cam 35 or rocking lever such as a gear or an intermittently acting electromagnet may be employed.
