Abstract

Cutting and slicing bread, meat, and the like.-In a machine for slicing bread, bacon, &c. to any depth, for instance to the crust, so that a slice may be separated as desired, the knife is reciprocated horizontally and vertically at the same time, but with more than one horizontal reciprocation to one vertical movement. The frame C, Fig. 1, carrying the knife is moved in the uprights B by pins E, E' on cranks F, F<1> mounted on parallel shafts G, G' rotated through gearing from the main shaft J. The frame is reciprocated horizontally by a rod L, operated from the shaft G<1> by wheels g and a smaller wheel g<1>, a crank K, and a rod K<1>. The depth of the cut is regulated either by making the knife adjustable in the frame, or by raising or lowering the cutting-table N by means of a cam T<1> on a rod T. The meat table is fed forwards in the usual way, the ratchet being actuated from the shaft G by a crank having a roller which strikes against a curved lever connected to the pawl. In the modified reciprocating-mechanism shown in plan in Fig. 6, a lever C<2> carrying the knife-frame C is pivoted to a fixed rod G<3> within the shaft G', and is raised and lowered by a cam F<2> on the shaft G. Horizontal reciprocation along a rod C<3> is obtained by the engagement of a pin k<2> on a crank-disk K<2> rotated from the shaft G' by a gear-wheel g<1> with a slot k<3> in a lever K<3> pivoted by a pin k<4> on the lever C<2>. The shafts G, G<1> are rotated at different speeds by the pinion x and different-sized spur-wheels y, y<1>.
