476,969. Slicing fruit or vegetables. KING, R., and CURWEN, G. June 20, 1936, No. 17210. [Class 5 (i)] A machine for producing slices of vegetables or fruit, and more particularly of potatoes, wherein the cut faces are grooved, and the grooves on one side intersect the grooves on the other side, comprises one or more rotary holders for the potato to be sliced, a holder consisting of a tubular container in which the potato is inserted, and a plunger in the container which presses the potato resiliently against a moving knife blade. As shown, rotary knives are used. The potatoes are inserted into the holders 21 through apertures 21c, the plungers 22 being withdrawn by the handles 40. The plungers are advanced to apply the feed pressure to the potatoes by weights 39 and cables 37. The holders are mounted for oscillation on rollers 29, 30 and are retained in position thereon by rollers 31, 32 on cross pieces 33 secured by wing-nuts 35. The knives 18 are corrugated and are secured over radial slots in a disc 17 driven through worm gearing 13, 15 by a motor 9, the knife shaft 16 being connected by linkage 43, 44, 45, shaft 46, and linkage 47 ... 50 to the holders 21 so that they are oscillated in synchronism with the knives. The plunger rods 26 are splined at 28a to the covers 28 of the holders 21 so that they oscillate therewith, and to prevent sticking of the potatoes to the plunger owing to deposition of starch, a front plate 24 of glass is provided, the plate being embedded in a dished disc 23 of lead. The cutter disc is housed in a casing 41 terminating at its lower portion in a discharge shoot 41a. The number of knives and holders employed may be varied, e.g. a radial row of holders and a corresponding radial row of knives, or a circular row of holders and a circular row of knives may be provided. The holders may be oscillated manually. According to the Provisional Specification, the slices are cut by a reciprocating knife blade comprising a plain portion offset from the corrugated cutting part, the potato being pressed against the plain part at the beginning of the cutting stroke. The turning of the holder is effected by a pawl on a frame carrying the blade striking an abutment on the holder. The pawl is adjustable for producing different angular movements of the holder.
