Cutting-out apparatus.-Relates to sole-blank cutting presses wherein the leather strips are fed by an endless belt or chain having an intermittent feed to the cutting-head, and comprises means for preventing overthrow of the feeding mechanism at the end of its stroke, adjusting means to enable cross-bars, which carry the work, to be kept parallel and perpendicular to the line of travel of the chain, and means for positioning and guiding the work passing to the cutters. A vertically reciprocating cutter head 15, driven in the usual manner, is supported on a pair of standards 11 mounted on a base 10. A pair of endless chains 72 are led over five pairs of sprockets 53, 69, 68, 55, 59, the pair 59 at the rear of the machine being mounted on a pivoted spring-pressed arm 57 to tension the chains; while the two pairs 68, 69 at the front are mounted in an extension 65 of a top frame 64 extending the length of the machine, pivoting about the rear sprocket shaft 54, and adjustably supported by studs 71 at the front end. An operating handle, not shown, prevents its detachment or displacement in the clamp as it turns, and a further guiding plate 116 removes the natural bend of the leather and passes it under the cutters. In order to prevent the relative displacement of the leather and the cutters by the inertia of the moving parts at the end of the feeding stroke, a friction brake is provided on the shaft 66 of the front sprocket 68. This brake consists of a stationary member 123 mounted on the shaft and having an extension 138, Fig. 8, bearing against the frame, while two discs, one on either side of the stationary member, and separated therefrom by leather discs, revolve with the shaft. one being adjustably mounted thereon to give the desired degree of freedom. As the cross-bars 74 pass over the cutting bed, a shoe 134, pivotally mounted on the top rail 119 by bell-crank levers 131 at each end, is alternately raised and lowered, this motion being transmitted through a bellcrank lever 137 to a sliding spring-pressed rod 37 which moves a cam-roller 45 into and out of the path of a cam 47 on the shaft 25 of the pinion 24. This cam-roller is mounted on a stub shaft secured to the shaft 27 operating the clutch-fork 28, hence should a cross-bar remain over the cutting bed, the cam-roll remains in the path of the cam, which is timed to withdraw the clutch before the cutters can descend.
