427,269. Leather-working machines. TURNER TANNING MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and SCHETTLER, G. A., Bramley, near Leeds. May 4, 1934, No. 13549. [Class 76] Relates to machines for performing shaving &c. operations on hides, leather, &c. of the type in which the hide &c. is pressed against a rotary cutter 10 by a bed roller 4 mounted upon a frame 3 which is pivoted at 2, the gap between the cutter 10 and the roller 4 being determined by adjustable stops 5 and the pressure exerted by a spring 14 being adjustable, e.g. by a nut 18. According to the invention, both these adjustments are effected simultaneously by a single operating means. The adjustable stops 5 are in the form of screws which abut against fixed projections 11 on the machine frame and are moved axially by nuts 6 which are turned by worms 7 on a transverse shaft 8. The lower end of the frame 3 is urged to the left (Fig. 2) by a spring 14 acting through toggle links 15, 19 which are straightened, so as to advance the roller 4, by a treadle lever 13, 28. The initial tension of the spring 14 is adjusted by a nut 31 and the pressure which it exerts under working conditions is adjusted by a long nut 18 mounted in the frame 3 and furnished with a worm wheel 36. A shaft 37, fitted with a hand-wheel 43, is arranged to operate the shaft 8 through bevel gear 35, 41 and the nut 18 by a worm 42. Movement of the hand wheel 43 thus simultaneously adjusts the limiting stop 5 and the working pressure of the spring 14. In order that the two adjustments may, if desired, be made independently, the bevel wheel 35 is arranged so that it can be moved along the shaft 8 out of engagement with the bevel wheel 41. The shaft 8 can then be rotated by a handle 59 and locked by a nut 65. In a modification, the shafts 8, 37 and gears 35, &c. are replaced by a single sprocket chain engaging the nuts 6, 18.
