Abstract

459,507. Leather-working machines. TANKING PROCESS CO., 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Connor, J. H. ; Newton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) July 6, 1935, No. 19342. Convention date, July 9, 1934. [Class 76] A machine for performing operations such as putting-out hides and skins comprises a work support and a number of pairs of toolcarrying members, e.g. bands or chains, arranged parallel to one another and moving in opposite directions from a central portion of the work support, the space between one pair of oppositely moving members being staggered relatively to that between the adjacent pair. The tool carrying members are carried by a rotatable turret which is continuously rotated during the movement of the tools.. The work is carried into position for treatment by a belt 10 overlying a bed 20 and a set of antifriction rollers 23, the movement of the belt being effected through gearing by an electromotor 16 the circuit of which is controlled by a manually operated switch. The operative tools comprise metal blades secured to belts and these blades may consist of separated sections 312, Fig. 8, interspersed with continuous sections 310. The tool carrving belts pass over rollers mounted in supporting frames 38, 82 and are arranged in pairs, 24, 26 and 28, 30, moving in opposite directions, the space 34 between the pair 24, 26 being staggered relatively to the space 36 between the pair 28, 30. The belts are driven by the rollers 48, 104 at their outer ends which are rotated by belts, one of which is shown at 46, passing over sprockets driven through bevel gearing from a central shaft 110. The roller supporting frames are attached, towards their outer ends, to links 64 having spring- controlled connection with levers 66, the arms 70 of which bear against rods 72 having contact with cam surfaces 74 on a fixed boss 152. The inner ends of the belts 24, 34 are supported by rollers mounted on a shaft 96 carried between frame members 56 of a turret in which is a bearing for the shaft 110, which also has an end bearing 120 engaging a boss on the turret, so that on the shaft 110 being lifted by means of a lever 164 controlled by dashpot 180 the turret is raised and the tools moved out of contact with the work. The shaft 110 is rotated, by an electromotor 132, through gearing including an elongated pinion 122 and through the medium of a gear 134, gears 136, 138, 144, 146 and a gear 148 secured to the turret effects the rotation of the latter, while at the same time the tool belts are actuated to treat the work. During this rotation elevated parts of the cam surface 74 cause the levers 66 to be moved to produce increased pressure of the tools on parts of the work which is so placed on the carrier 10 that this increased pressure is applied along the median line of the skin. The work carrying belt 10 is stopped in correct position with the work beneath the tools, by the engagement of a roller 214 in a notch 212 on the side of the belt, the movement of the roller under stress of a spring 218 causing the breaking of the circuit of the motor 16 through the actuation of a delayed action solenoid, the belt being stopped with the notch just beyond the roller. The motors 16 and 132 are controlled by switches 210, 240, 242. A device is provided for removing the treated work from the belt 10 comprising a stripper roll 254 and a reciprocating table 256 on which the treated hides are piled. The table is mounted by means of interconnected bell-crank levers 302 on frame 276 which is traversed forwardly in guides, by the engagement with a depending bracket 272 thereon of a stud on a chain 258 driven at the same rate as the belt 10. As the chain passes over the sprocket 260 the stud moves out of contact with the bracket and allows the table to run back, the level of the table being at the same time lowered by a ratchet-and-pawl device which effects a step-by-step rotation of a supporting screw 292, provision being thereby made for the accumulation of hides on the table.
