Description

Patented June 21, 1932 FRANK WAYIQAND, on MASSACHUSETTS OFFICE n Yd -Y LEATHER sHAvING MACHINE Application led August 19, 1930. Serial No. 476,326.
This invention relates to leather shaving machines of the kind employed in tanneries and other leather working; establishments. Heretofore it has been considered substantially impossible to shave green hides direct 15 from the untanned yhide have considerable commercial value, while the removal of the undesirable portionslof the hide before tanning results in the savingin the tanning agentemployed.
\ The present invention provides an improvement in means by which :the hides, whether tanned or untanned,.may be delivered Yto the rotary shaving cutter. GeneralT characteristics of the apparatus hereinafter set forth 35 are illustrated and described in my copending applications, Serial No. 384,635,1iled August 9, 1929; Serial No.425,810, led February 4, 1930; and Serial No. 468,314, filed July 16, 1930, thezlatter disclosing one'desirable ,30 form of work-feedingmeans. rIhe present inventlon pertalns to an improvement 1n;
ifeeding means of the general type disclosed in the last-named application.. Y j b f In the accompanying drawing I have il- 35 lustrated in side elevation, partly in section,
a leather shaving machine embodying my improved feeding means. Y Y Y InY he illustrated construction the bed roll support 2 is 'pivotally mounted at the point'* 3 of the main frame 1 and this bed roll support carries -my improvedfeeding devices. This support is arranged to be oscillated toward and from the rotarycutter 14 by means similar to that disclosed in my aforesaid cof pending applications, such means comprising a treadle lever 5, connecting links 6 and 7,
and a toggle'device 8 adapted to move the upper end of the support toward the cutter when the treadle .is Vdepressed and to -lock 50 the support inoperative position.V
the apron9 is sov driven that its upper run*Vv n `VAn endless conveyor belt or apron 9, which 'y l Y may be of any suitable material, for example canvas, rubber, flexible metal, or-the likeis supported by spaced parallelvrolls 10 andl 11 journaled in suitable bearings carried by the support 2. The roll 11 is arranged in closely spaced relation and parallel to thev bed roll f 12, the latter as usual having a hard (e. g. metallic) surface and cooperating with the cutter 14 during the shaving operation.V `The rolls 11 and 12 are rotated in the same direc-` tion in any suitable manner, as forexample by means of a drive belt or chain 13 passing around pulleys or sprockets on the ends of the rollsl 11 and 12 and driven throughfany suitable train of belts or gearing from the drive shaft 15 of the machine. ,'Ihe driving connections may be suchas to rotate the rolls 11 and 124continuously while the machine is when it reaches the delivery end of the belt.
'At the extreme'front of the support 2 I l prefer to arrange an idler roll 16, free to turn in 'suitable bearings, and constituting a rest,g85 against which the operatormay lean as he presents the work to the machine.
For stripping the Vwork from the bed roll I prefer to provideathin-.wedge-like Vblade afterthe cutting operation. A'roll 18 may, if desired, bevarranged` below the bed roll 12 arranged abovepthe bedy roll to assi-st the latter in advancing the' work toward L the cutter.
lVhen thesupport is in operative position, im@
17 having its edge irl-close proximity' to they90 y .bed roll so as to peel the work from the roll Y *approaches the roll l2. The operator places a hide on the apron and moves it about to bring it into the best position for action by the cutter. In thus positioning the hide the operator may lean against the depending portion of the hide, pressing it against the roll 16 so as to afford a firm grip for holding the Work back to some extent against the pull of the apron. The hidetends to stick closely to the apron but byarranging the bed roll outside of the apron andinovingthe roll and apron in the same direction, the bed roll strips other and equivalent arrangements maybe employed Without departingjfrom the spirit of the invention. .Y y. I claim:
i l. A leather Ashaving machine comprising a cutter, abed roll having a hard Worlr-supporting surface cooperable YWith the cutter, and a conveyor device terminating closely adjacent to the'bed roll to the latter.
"2. A leather `shaving machine ycomprising a cutter, f an `endlessapron hzrrvingjaY Work! supporting and advancingsurface, and 'a hardsurfaced bed roll at'the endA ofjsaidsur#V 'face,"the bed rollv beingso arranged rand so driven relatively to the Work-supporting and the Work from the latter;y
3.Y A leather shaving machine comprising a cutter, and means for presenting Worlrto the cutter comprising closely spaced .parallel rolls adjacent to the cutter, one roll being a advancing surface of the apronY as to strip -hard surfacedbed roll,"thev otherroll form'- ing one support for an endless Worksfeeding aPlOIl, and means for; rotatingboth rollsjn the same direction.
" f 4. In a leather shaving machine including a cutter, a bed roll cooperating therewith, an
Vendless apron fo'rfeedi'ng the Work to the bedroll, andia freely rotatableroll adjacent' to the receiving end ofthe apron. A 5.
