Abstract
233,591. Marks, E. C. R., (American Machine & Foundry Co.). Sept. 23, 1924. Cigarettes are made from tobacco shreds of sinuous outline as shown at 16, Fig. 6. The shreds are cut from a mass 11 of tobacco leaves by a knife 12, Fig. 1, having serrated faces and a serrated cutting edge. A ledger-plate 13 with which the knife 12 co-operates is correspondingly serrated. The knife 12 is secured ta a frame 22 reciprocated vertically by a yoke 15 mounted on a crank 14. The up-stroke of the knife is adapted to actuate rollers 8, 9 to feed the tobacco to the knife 12 through a throat 10 supporing the plate 13. The mechanism for this purpose comprises a vertical shaft connected by worm gearing with the rollers 8, 9. A sleeve, loose on the shaft, is rotated by a stud on the frame 22 engaging a helical cam groove in the sleeve, and, in turn, rotates the shaft by ratchet-and-pawl mechanism.
