Cigarette-making machines. - In cutting-off mechanism for continuous-rod machines, the angular velocity of the knife is accelerated during the cutting action only. The drive is effected through worm and wheel gearing, the worm together with the knife-carrying discs 12, 13 being mounted on the shaft 11, and the wheel 9 on a vertical shaft 8. Also secured to the shaft 8 is a crank 16 connected by a rod 18 to a lever 19 fulcrummed on a stud 20. A roller 23 carried by the rod 19 works in an annular groove 24 in a collar 25 between the gear 5 and plates 12, 13. A second roller 26 also works in the lower part of the groove 24 and by means of it the guide 31 for the cigarette rod 32 and the slot in the ledger plate 29 are given a similar movement to that imparted to the knife. The roller 26 is mounted on an upright 27, the base of which is formed to slide in the fixed part 33.
