Cigarette-making machines. - In a cut-off mechanism for continuous-rod machines, the blade and its spindle receive reciprocating motion, the heavier supporting and driving mechanism having rotary movement only imparted to them. The spindle 31 of the blade 32 is mounted in a shell 12, to one end of which is secured a pinion 16 driven from the main shaft 22 through bevel and spur-wheels. Secured within the shell 12 to the fixed spindle 14 is a gear 28 flanked by cam surfaces 29, 30 engaging with a pinion 35 and camfollowers 36, 37 on the spindle 31 of the cut-off blade. A stationary shaft 38 supports the slide 40, which carries the ledger plate 41 and the guide tubes 42, 43 for the cigarette rod C. An eccentric 45 on the main shaft 22 is connected by arm 44 to the slide 40. To lower the shell 12 as the blade wears, a screwed rod 46 supported in the bracket 8 may be turned to raise a nut 48 pinned to blocks 50 protruding into the supporting frame 11. The upwardly projecting arm 51 of frame 11 is clamped by a bolt 53 to the bracket 7.
