Abstract
201,364. Broughton, J. June 26, 1922. Guards, controlling.-In guards for power presses &c. wherein the guard-actuating lever is operated through a pin-and-slot connection by a sliding member reciprocated by the machine, this sliding member runs in a guide or guides separate from those of the press plunger and may take the form of a plate operated from the crank-shaft, while the slot, which may be formed in the plate or the lever, is preferably so shaped as to actuate the guard before the plunger reaches the danger zone. A pin 8, Figs. 1 and 3, eccentrically mounted on the crank-shaft 6 or on a sleeve 7 secured thereto, is connected by an adjustable rod 9 to a plate 2 slidable in a guide 3 carried by the frame 5. The plate has a slot 17, with a substantially horizontal lower portion, receiving a roller 16 on a short arm 15 secured to a spindle 13, which carries a long arm 12 linked to the guard 1. The guard slides on bars 19 and carries spring buffers 22. Upon descent of the ram 10, the arms 15, 12 are rocked until the roller 16 lies in the vertical part of the slot 17, as shown in Fig. 3. In a modification, the lever 12 is bent and carries the roller 16 at its angle. As shown in Fig. 5, the operative part of the slot 17 in the plate 2 may be so situated as to actuate the guard at a later part of the ram's descent. The position of the guide 3 may be varied'.
